INTERVIEW TIPS
We know recording conditions won’t be perfect, but in order to have the best possible viewing and listening experience for our audience, please keep the following in mind:
Video Recording Tips
-
Center yourself in your screen: Ensure that the camera is positioned straight on or even slightly elevated. Camera angles under the chin are not flattering!
-
Use natural lighting as much as possible: Try to have light facing you so there aren’t many shadows. Do not have backlighting or it will cause a silhouette effect.
-
Minimize Motion: Keep your body relatively still while recording. Hand motions are OK but don’t overdo it!
-
Clothing/Attire: Wear neutral colored clothing. Avoid busy patterns. Don’t wear t-shirts with large sayings. Caps are not recommended but OK if it doesn’t obscure your face.
-
Facial Expression: Appear as energized as possible without overdoing it. Smile often. Look at the camera and imagine you are looking at your audience.
Audio Recording Tips
-
Microphone placement: If you have an external microphone place it at the same level as your mouth, a few inches away, but do not obscure your face.
-
Speaking: Sit up straight, breathe slowly and evenly, and keep your body still.
-
Test recording: Always do a test recording to identify and remove background noise, and to adjust your volume, tone, and speaking speed.
-
Recording environment: Find a quiet room and do your best to minimize echo. Turn off any fans or heaters. Trains and planes can mess up a recording too!
-
Stay hydrated: Drink water before and throughout recording, but don’t drink too much or you may need to go to the restroom!
-
Phone Silenced: Make sure that your phone is muted and alerts are off.
