Momentum Events: Moving Men Forward

Gentlemen,

The anchor event for most men’s ministry organizations is the annual retreat. We call these momentum events because they inspire men to make important decisions that will affect their life for the next year and beyond.

Momentum events are large gatherings that are designed to move men from the couch an into the arena of action.

This past weekend we enjoyed the inspirational Built for Freedom Men’s Summit at Cohutta Springs Conference Center in Georgia. This was the first momentum event of the 2024 fall season and guys it didn’t disappoint!

Our focus today is on momentum events so our line-up features the following…

Built for Freedom Men’s Summit Report

Over 150 men attended the Georgia-Cumberland Conference “Built for Freedom Men’s Summit” at Cohutta Springs Conference Center this past weekend. The weekend was was a huge success and actually exceeded our expectations. Highlights of the weekend included the following…

Beautiful Setting

Cohutta Springs never ceases to impress the men that come from all across the country. It’s beauty and ammenities are the best. We all want to give a big shout-out to Bruce Jacobs, Alicia Zinner, and staff for their commitment to outstanding service. The food is always delicious

Bonding Brotherhood

One of the most important aspects of a weekend event are the opportunities for bonding with other like-minded men. It is always heart-warming to see men engaged in deep conversations and intimate prayer. No one leaves feeling alone!

Powerful Testimonies

The litmus test of every man is his testimony. The story of how God has transformed his life. During the weekend we heard many testimonies which culminated in Andrew Gonzales’ powerful testimony on Sunday morning. Andrew and his wife started a ministry in Mozambique that builds concrete homes, the most recent of which was funded by Blueprint for Men.

Having Fun!

When men get together they need to have fun, and Shawn Wray, Adairsville Church men’s ministry leader set the tone.  At the beginning of every session Shawn shared a man joke, got them moving, and gave away door prizes. Fun!

Soul-Stirring Music

Every year the music seems to get better and better and this year was no exception.  I’d like to give a big shout-out to the following men who helped us lift our voices heavenward.

  • Kyle Neuroh and Raymond Dewar from the Kentucky-Tennessee Conference led out in an energetic song service. Several other musicians added their talents into the mix which made the experience even more inspiring. These kinds of experiences make us long for heaven where we will join the angelic choir!
  • Tag Garmon led out in our theme song for the weekend that he wrote titled, “FREE”. Not only was this song a perfect fit for our theme of Freedom, but it was so catchy that it’s still playing in our minds!

Challenging Messages

This year we had a fantastic line-up of speakers that focused on our theme, “Built for Freedom”.

  • Marty Miller’s message was “Freedom IN Christ” which featured challenges men face with their relationship with God. To assist in this Marty’s wife, Gale Miller, shared her journey with overcoming fear and hearing God’s voice.
  • Tom Pyke’s message was “Freedom TO BE Known” which featured how men’s groups enhance a man’s discipleship journey. He zeroed in on manhood education, discipleship, and recovery groups, encouraging men to sign-up!
  • Dr. Joe Martin’s message was “Freedom FROM Bondage” which featured his powerful testimony while challenging men to break free from bondage. His words of wisdom and challenge still reasonate in our ears!
  • Grant Graves’ message was “Freedom TO Love” which featured the ultimate power of the gospel… the power of the Holy Spirit to love like Jesus. Grant called every man to take action in tangible ways.
  • Chaplain Jorge Torres’ message was “Freedom FOR God’s Glory” which featured his powerful testimony that included vignettes of stories from the military, his marriage, his formative years, and his ministry to me. Powerful!

Below is the recording of Chaplain Jorge Torres powerful message from Saturday evening. Enjoy!

Men’s Retreats: A Step-by-Step Guide

A Christian men’s retreat is a powerful opportunity for spiritual growth, fellowship, and renewal. Whether you’re organizing a retreat for your church, a small group, or a broader community, careful planning and execution are essential for a successful event. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process from start to finish.

Step 1: Define the Vision and Goals

1.1 Establish the Purpose Determine the primary purpose of the retreat. Are you focusing on spiritual growth, fellowship, leadership development, or a combination of these? Your purpose will guide all other planning aspects.

1.2 Set Specific Goals Outline clear, measurable goals. For example, you might aim to deepen participants’ understanding of a particular Bible passage, strengthen group bonds, or equip men with practical tools for spiritual growth.

Step 2: Assemble a Planning Team

2.1 Recruit Team Members Gather a team of dedicated volunteers with various skills. Include individuals who are organized, skilled in communication, and passionate about the retreat’s goals.

2.2 Define Roles and Responsibilities Assign roles based on team members’ strengths, such as logistics coordinator, speaker liaison, or marketing lead. Establish regular meetings to track progress and address any issues.

Step 3: Choose a Date and Location

3.1 Select a Date Choose a date that accommodates most participants. Consider potential conflicts such as major holidays, school schedules, or other community events.

3.2 Find a Suitable Venue Choose a location that supports your retreat’s goals. This could be a retreat center, a church facility, or a camp. Ensure the venue has the necessary amenities, such as meeting rooms, accommodations, and outdoor spaces if needed.

Step 4: Develop the Program and Agenda

4.1 Plan the Schedule Create a balanced schedule that includes worship sessions, Bible studies, group discussions, and recreational activities. Ensure there is time for both structured activities and personal reflection.

4.2 Incorporate Key Elements Design sessions around key themes, such as spiritual renewal, discipleship, or community service. Include opportunities for prayer, worship, and small group discussions.

4.3 Plan for Breaks Include regular breaks to allow participants to rest, socialize, and reflect. Unstructured time is also important for personal interaction and relaxation.

Step 5: Arrange for Speakers and Facilitators

5.1 Identify Speakers Select speakers who align with your retreat’s theme and goals. These could be pastors, church leaders, or other respected figures within your community. Reach out to them early to confirm their availability.

5.2 Coordinate Logistics Work out details with your speakers, such as their travel arrangements, compensation, and any specific needs they may have. Ensure they understand the retreat’s objectives and audience.

Step 6: Organize Activities and Materials

6.1 Plan Engaging Activities Select activities that are engaging and relevant to your retreat’s goals. These might include team-building exercises, worship sessions, and Bible study groups. Ensure activities are designed to foster community and spiritual growth.

6.2 Prepare Materials Gather all necessary materials, such as Bibles, study guides, workbooks, and audiovisual equipment. Prepare any handouts or resources needed for sessions.

Step 7: Handle Logistics

7.1 Budget Planning Create a detailed budget covering all expenses, including venue rental, food, transportation, and speaker fees. Track spending carefully and adjust as necessary to stay within budget.

7.2 Arrange Accommodations and Transportation If the retreat is not local, arrange transportation and accommodations. Ensure that all logistical details are clear and communicated to participants well in advance.

7.3 Plan Meals Organize meal plans that accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences. Decide whether meals will be catered or prepared on-site and coordinate with food providers as needed.

Step 8: Communicate with Participants

8.1 Send Invitations Send out invitations with essential details such as the date, location, purpose, and what participants need to bring. Use email, social media, or printed invitations, depending on your group’s preferences.

8.2 Provide Pre-Retreat Information Distribute pre-retreat materials, including the agenda, packing list, and any preparatory reading or activities. Keeping participants informed helps ensure they come prepared and excited.

Step 9: Execute the Retreat

9.1 Arrive Early Arrive at the venue ahead of time to set up and ensure everything is in place. Test all equipment and make sure all materials are ready.

9.2 Welcome Participants Greet participants warmly as they arrive. Provide them with any necessary information or materials, and make them feel comfortable and welcomed.

9.3 Facilitate the Retreat Lead the retreat according to the planned agenda, but remain flexible if adjustments are needed. Encourage active participation and create an environment of openness and support.

Step 10: Evaluate and Follow Up

10.1 Gather Feedback Collect feedback from participants at the end of the retreat through surveys or informal discussions. This will help you understand what worked well and identify areas for improvement.

10.2 Review and Reflect Meet with your planning team to review the retreat’s successes and challenges. Discuss feedback and consider how to enhance future retreats.

10.3 Follow Up Send a follow-up message to participants, expressing gratitude for their attendance and sharing any additional resources or reflections from the retreat. Keeping in touch helps maintain the connections formed during the event.

Summary:

By following these steps, you can organize a Christian men’s retreat that is spiritually enriching, engaging, and well-executed. Thoughtful planning and clear communication will ensure that every participant leaves with a deeper connection to their faith and to one another.

Featured Skill: Staging a Men’s Retreat

The focal point of a men’s retreat is the meeting room stage. Setting up an event stage involves several key elements to ensure everything runs smoothly. Here’s a checklist of essentials:

1. Stage Design and Layout

  • Stage Size and Shape: Determine based on the event type and audience size.
  • Stage Level: Ensure it’s elevated if visibility is a concern.
  • Backdrop: Use a branded or thematic backdrop if needed.

BANNERS: We have found that large colorful stage banners provide the following enhancements to an event.

    • Speakers – event speakers have a point of reference as they give their presentations
    • Audience – event participants are continually reminded of the theme and main points
    • Environment – well designed banners provide beauty and color to the stage

Here are the stage banners we created on Canva for our “Built for Freedom” Men’s Summit. They were a huge blessing.

2. Seating and Audience Arrangement

  • Seating Layout: Arrange seats to maximize audience engagement and comfort.
  • Accessibility: Ensure there are seats for people with disabilities and clear pathways.

3. Audio-Visual Equipment

  • Microphones: Lavalier, handheld, or podium mics depending on the event.
  • Speakers: Arrange for adequate sound coverage.
  • Projectors and Screens: For presentations or visuals.
  • Lighting: Stage lights for visibility, and ambient lighting for atmosphere.

4. Technical Support

  • AV Technicians: On-site to manage equipment and troubleshoot issues.
  • Cables and Connectors: Have spares on hand for any last-minute fixes.

5. Staging and Props

  • Furniture: Desks, chairs, or podiums as required.
  • Props: Any thematic elements or items necessary for the event.

6. Safety and Accessibility

  • Emergency Exits: Clearly marked and unobstructed.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Easily accessible.
  • Ramp Access: For wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

7. Logistics

  • Rehearsal Time: Schedule for speakers or performers to practice.
  • Signage: Directional signs for the audience and event information.

8. Additional Considerations

  • Green Room: Space for speakers or performers to prepare.
  • Refreshments: Depending on the event, provide food and drinks if necessary.
  • Event Schedule: Display or distribute schedules to keep everyone informed.

Tailoring the setup to your specific event and audience will help ensure a successful and smooth-running occasion!
