Becoming a Patriarch Ain’t for Sissies!

Gentlemen,

As we wrap-up our June series on fatherhood I felt it would be important to focus on something that has been under attack for quite some time now, the “patriarchy”.  But just what is patriarchy?

Patriarchy is defined as a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.

Throughout the Bible we see that patriarchy is the God-given design for social order. But, unfortunately, most men have abused their high calling which has contributed to the battle of the sexes, the rise of feminism, the decline of masculine leadership, and the weakening of the home.

Instead of focusing on the problem and whining we as strong men of God must learn how we can become the father, grandfather, and patriarch that God calls us to be.  But brace yourself… becoming a patriarch ain’t for sissies!

Here’s to Building Godly Patriarchs,

8 Traits of a Godly Patriarch

In today’s rapidly changing world, the role of a Christian family patriarch holds profound significance. It entails not only providing for the material needs of the family but also nurturing their spiritual growth and fostering a home environment grounded in Christian values.

As we navigate the complexities of modernity, here are actionable steps and corresponding Bible verses that illuminate the path of a Christian family patriarch:

1. Deepen Personal Relationship with God

Action Step: Prioritize daily prayer, meditation on Scripture, and participation in church fellowship to strengthen personal faith.

Verse: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

2. Cultivate Family Unity

Action Step: Initiate regular family devotions, discussions on faith matters, and quality time spent together to foster unity.

Verse: “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

3. Lead with Love and Servant Leadership

Action Step: Model Christ-like love, humility, and servant-hearted leadership in all interactions with family members.

Verse: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)

4. Uphold Biblical Principles and Moral Standards

Action Step: Establish clear moral guidelines based on biblical teachings and consistently uphold them within the family.

Verse: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

5. Mentor Spiritual Growth

Action Step: Actively disciple and mentor each family member in their spiritual journey through teaching, encouragement, and example.

Verse: “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

6. Engage in Community Service and Outreach

Action Step: Participate as a family in community service projects and outreach efforts to demonstrate Christ’s love to others.

Verse: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

7. Equip for Modern Challenges with Biblical Wisdom

Action Step: Stay informed about contemporary issues and guide family discussions with biblical wisdom and discernment.

Verse: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

8. Foster Accountability and Growth

Action Step: Seek accountability from fellow believers and continually grow in faith, humility, and leadership within the family.

Verse: “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)

Conclusion

In conclusion, being a Christian family patriarch in the modern world is a calling that requires steadfast faith, sacrificial love, and unwavering commitment to biblical principles. By embracing these action steps and anchoring them in the timeless wisdom of Scripture, patriarchs can effectively lead their families with grace, wisdom, and a profound impact on their spiritual and personal development. May every Christian patriarch aspire to fulfill this noble role with diligence and devotion, guided by God’s Word and empowered by His grace.
