Day 1 – Alaska Trip /
I’m packing for my trip to Alaska right now. I’m taking a break to write a few thoughts. It’s 5:30 am. I’m tired. Tired before the trip starts. Sound familiar? Getting ready to take a trip is often the most exhausting part of a trip. Especially if you are going to Alaska.
So how do you prepare for Alaska? It’s big. It’s extreme. So, the luggage I pack might just be extremely big! So, when I started packing last night I picked out my biggest suit case. It’s a super large uggly red one that has the uppermost handle missing. I call it “Big Red”. It’s a cheap under-engineered behemoth, but it gets the job done.
When I started packing I thought to myself, “Could I find a way to reduce my luggage to just a carry-on.” Going to Alaska with a carry on? What would that look like? I knew I could do it if I only brought only one pair of underwear, socks, pants, shorts, etc. but the better part of judgement said no. So, here I am bringing the whole kitchen sink. Extra clothes that I will never wear. Extra stuff just in case. The suitcase is bulging. It may lose it’s other handle on this trip. I hate stuff.
So here I sit taking a break from it all, thinking deep thoughts about luggage… baggage. Friends, we all have stuff. Stuff that is seen and unseen. Do you carry unneccessary stuff, lugging around a lot of baggage? Do you feel pressed down and heavy laden? It reminds me of Jesus words that puts all of life’s challenges and burdens in the correct perspective. He said…
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
Are you burdened down and heavy laden? Are you packing a big red suit case? Or have you cast your burdens aside and yoked up with Jesus today? It’s your choice. Everyday He is calling… “Come unto me…”
But, I’m going to Alaska. So for me right now I’ll be packing “Big Red”. The clock is ticking. It’s time to carry-on!
